Great Ocean Mountain Bike Race

New this year, the Mountain Bike Race follows the course of the bike leg of the Adventure Race, with an additional loop and time check. The course is set in the Otway Forest just outside Apollo Bay, and features a variety of terrains from steep bush tracks to fast downhill sections with magnificent views. Suitable for recreational riders and experts alike.

Register in Person: You can register in person on the night before at the Apollo Bay Surf LIfe Saving Club.

Race Schedule:
7:00am Race briefing (at Apollo Bay Surf Lifesaving Club - plenty of parking in the area)
7:20am ride up to Elliott River Road (at a leisurely pace will take 15/20 minutes, can be your warm-up)
8.00am Race start

Race Description:

The 45km mountain bike ride starts at the Elliott River Road turnoff from the Great Ocean Road, then along the Snowy Ridge Track (a slippery grass/moss hill climb with some obstacles) turning left at Parker Road (keep left) to a checkpoint, where you turn around and follow Parker Spur Road up to the Great Ocean Road junction. Dismount and cross the Great Ocean Road GIVE WAY TO ALL CARS ON THE GREAT OCEAN ROAD. Follow Binns Road keeping left (as the road is open to traffic); turn right on to Old Bay Road, to Killala Road (open to traffic) and then down to Barham Valley Road (open to traffic). Ride the last 3kms to Apollo Bay Recreation Reserve. There will be signs and marshalls along the way to make sure you don't get lost.

The race finishes just outside the town of Apollo Bay. There is limited parking at the finish, so we expect you to be able to roll into town from there and pick up your car.

Male & Female Race Categories:
14 - 17 Male & Female Junior
18 - 39 Male & Female Open
40 - 49 Male & Female Masters
50+ Male & Female Veterans

Competitors can enter and collect prizes in only ONE category. Once a competitor has competed in the event, they cannot change categories.

Prizes/Medallions will be awarded to ALL RACE CATEGORIES (1st, 2nd & 3rd).

Race Confirmation & Race Kit:
Check-in for Race Confirmation and pick up your Race Kit (including Race Number & Race T-shirt) from 7:30pm – 10:30pm on Friday 26th February 2010 at the Apollo Bay Surf Lifesaving Club.

Race Rules:

  • Cycle Helmets must meet Australian safety standards and be worn at all times.
  • Riders will be required to have an official mark and race number on their arm, which must remain on the individual throughout the event. No rider shall be recorded as a finisher unless carrying the official mark and number on their arm.
  • Organisers reserve the right to accept, reject and cancel entries.
  • Protests must be made in writing and given to the Race Director within fifteen minutes of the announcement of the provisional results. All decisions of the Race Director will be final.
  • Race officials shall have the ultimate and final authority to remove a competitor from the race if the competitor is judged to be physically incapable of continuing the race without the risk of injury.
  • Each entrant must sign the indemnity declaration on the Entry Form before the event. If under 18, the parent or guardian must sign. The organisers reserve the right to reject or cancel any entry at any time.
  • Competitors must carry spare tyre or tubes and kits to be able to carry out their own repairs.
  • Aero bars or any form of aero bars will not be permitted on the race.
  • Assistance from vehicles is NOT permitted.
  • Bikers are required to heed directions and instructions of all race officials and public authorities.
  • Bikers on the road are individually responsible for following traffic laws and are solely responsible for the consequences of any infractions. The roads will NOT be closed [unless otherwise stated]. Competitors must stay in the left hand lane, as far left as possible at all times. Cyclist may ride two abreast and no more on a road. Cyclists must pass on the right of he slower cyclist.
  • Race officials have the right to reject any bike considered not to meet minimum safety requirements. If bike does not meet safety standards, contestant will be required to correct problem before participating in race.
  • Short cutting of course will result in disqualification.
  • Footwear must be fully enclosed
  • Bikes must be fitted with at least one front brake and one rear brake, both in full working order.
  • Competitors must start and finish the complete and full course on a non-motorised bicycle.
  • Competitors must ride the complete course as marked and directed, passing through all checkpoints. Taking shortcuts or using any unfair means of obtaining an advantage over other competitors will result in disqualification. It is the riders responsibility to ensure that the correct course is followed!
  • Individual competitors must use only one bike frame/wheels for the entire ride.
  • All competitors must carry the listed compulsory equipment.
  • Riders who withdraw or pull out at any time after the start must advise a marshal who has radio communications of their withdrawal immediately.
  • Riders may accept mechanical assistance on the course only by other registered racers. Outside assistance is only permitted inside the designated support areas.
  • One competitor cannot provide assistance in forward progression (pushing / pulling / towing) or food or drinks to another competitor in another category except in emergency circumstances.
  • Only registered riders or marshals / officials may ride on the course.
  • Apollo Bay Surf Life Saving Club has sole discretion to alter or amend the race format or the rules in order to increase the safety to participants or for any other reason deemed appropriate.
  • If the race is cancelled or called off after it has started, as soon as you have been notified of the cancellation it is each rider’s responsibility to get themselves back to either the Start or Finish areas.
  • Littering the course with inner tubes, food wrappers or any other litter will result in instant disqualification. [This event operates under the principle of "Leave No Trace", where all visitors to this beautiful environment must remove any waste that they generate during the ride. Compulsory equipment

  1. A First Aid kit comprising: 2 x crepe bandages, 2 x non-adhesive wound dressings, 6 x steri-strip wound closures, 1 x triangular bandage and 1 pr of surgical gloves.
  2. Spare tube(s), tyre levers and toolkit (allen keys/screwdrivers)
